Changing Lives by: educating students in Invest-a-Cats (Charitable Assets Training for Students) about the significance of philanthropy in the financial planning business. Raskob has also established a scholarship to this end, Patricia Farrow Raskob Financial Planning Scholarship in the College of Human Ecology.

K-State connection: Invest-a-Cats is a student-led extracurricular activity for those studying personal financial planning in the College of Human Ecology. It was formed by K-State students to manage a diversified portfolio fund.

Impact: Invest-a-Cats provides a real-life learning opportunity unmatched at any other university. Its unique aspect includes actual fundraising for the program. In partnership with the KSU Foundation development staff, students build a client base and gain firsthand experience raising funds to increase the Invest-a-Cats endowment principal.

What students are saying:  “Invest-a-Cats has enabled me to implement my education outside of the classroom,” Theresa Kasper, senior in personal financial planning, said. “In-class scenarios are a great teaching tool, but seeing the real-world effects of the market on our investments makes the Invest-a-Cats program irreplaceable.”

What others are saying:  “Charitable giving helps people support their interests while giving back to the community,” said Pat Raskob, a 1959 K-State business administration graduate and a fee-only financial planner in Tucson, Ariz. “Educating students about philanthropic giving before they begin their careers is important so they are aware of the benefits of philanthropy.”
