K-State — a special place: “Twenty some years after we were in college, K-State still feels comfortable,” said Mary Ice, and 1980 human ecology graduate and 1988 adult occupational continuing education graduate. “It’s a beautiful campus, but the people make it special. Whether dealing with students or faculty, the people are all outstanding.”

“We’re very impressed with the students at K-State, what they think about and how they approach their learning,” said Carl Ice, a 1979 industrial engineering graduate. “One of K-State’s strengths is the variety of programs that it offers. We wanted to make a gift that would go multiple places and help a diverse group of students.”

Six areas of opportunity: This passion for helping students led the Ices to establish six funds: the Carl Ice Engineering Scholarship, Mary How Ice Human Ecology Scholarship, Marshall Ice DB92 Radio Student Award, Ice Family Student Emergency Fund, Mary How Ice Excellence in Human Ecology and Carl R. Ice Deans Excellence Fund. These funds benefit the Colleges of Human Ecology, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences, plus the student life program.

A student’s appreciation: “I have realized that more than half of the value of a university education originates from your social interactions,” said Bryce Huschka, senior in industrial engineering. “The benefit of the Ice scholarship, and others like it, is to reduce debt and the countless hours that I would have otherwise spent working. This opened the time necessary to serve my community through the Student Governing Association, Student Alumni Board, Open House, my fraternity and many more organizations.”
