Changing lives by: Supporting sustainable agriculture at K-State by making a gift to the KSU Gardens. Ann Bidwell decided to support the new development of the gardens by purchasing a fountain for Phase 2 of the KSU Gardens expansion. Ann also established a scholarship in memory of her parents, Rose and Orville.
K-State connection: Ann’s father, the late Orville Bidwell, served as a professor in the College of Agriculture. The importance he placed on K-State and sustainable agriculture had a profound impact on Ann’s beliefs.
“Kansas State was important to my dad largely because of the professional and personal relationships that he developed here,” Ann said. “He delighted in the successes of his students and advisees. And, most importantly, some of his closest personal friendships came from the KSU family.”
Why she gave: A few years ago, Ann established the scholarship through a bequest - a gift made through her will. “When my mother died, I thought that I really wanted to honor her in some way, and, initially, it was by establishing a scholarship by giving a portion of my estate for sustainable agriculture,” Ann said. “When the scholarship is awarded, I won’t be around, but it was a way I could honor my parents and give back to K-State.”
Why it matters: “My gifts to K-State are out of gratitude,” Ann said. “I hope that my gifts change lives. I'm no expert, but conservation and sustainability of the land is very important, and I'm proud that my planned gift will support that.”
