K-State has a tradition of recruiting the best and brightest students throughout the state of Kansas and across the country. Known as the student scholar capital of America, we have more students who finished first and second in their high school graduating classes than any other university in our state. More importantly, we continue to be the No. 1 university of choice for Kansas high school seniors and community college transfers.
This year more than 4,000 K-State students received a total of $6.6 million in general scholarship support, and most were made possible through donations and gifts from alumni, parents and friends of the university.
At the same time K-State is setting record enrollments and achieving academic success, our competitors have three and four times the number of scholarship dollars that we have — three and four times. K-State students deserve more.
K-State has more than 700 students with a grade point average of 3.75 and above who are receiving no scholarship support. We desperately need scholarships for incoming freshmen or continuing students.
New ways have been identified for improving the quality of student life. These include upgrading and/or adding new facilities and services to the campus.
K-State has plans to replace the Jardine Apartment Complex and build a whole new housing option for our students that will include townhouses and apartments. A 25,000-square-foot addition to the K-State Student Union is proposed to build a Center for Student Activities that would create a home for the 375-plus campus clubs and organizations. Plans also include the renovation of East Stadium to serve as the future home for a K-State welcome center.
K-State continues to evolve in how it serves its student population. One of the newest programs is the Parents and Family Association.
The association was started in an effort to bring K-State families together in a whole new way. We’ve always involved parents in the K-State undergraduate experience. This is a natural way for us to move toward a more formalized association to help improve communication and assist in recruiting and fundraising.
A contribution to the K-State Parents and Family Fund provides support that will enhance student life at K-State. Funds are directed by members of the K-State Parents and Family Association Advisory Board, and are earmarked for scholarship support, housing, the student union, or new programs such as health and safety, technology, or career services.
