07/22/04 — Yapp commits additional $50,000 for scholarship in KSU College of Agriculture George Yapp, Barrington Hills, Ill., has made a commitment of $50,000 to the Kansas State University Foundation to supplement the George J. Yapp and Charlene B. Yapp Scholarship, which is designated for students enrolled in the College of Agriculture. This scholarship was established in 2000 with previous gifts totaling $53,000. Additional gifts totaling $11,200 for this scholarship have been provided by Quaker Oats Foundation and PepsiCo Foundation, through their matching gifts programs. Yapp is a native of Manhattan, Kan. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in milling science and management. While in college, Yapp was president of the Milling Association, Alpha Mu and the Arnold Air Society. He was a Distinguished ROTC Graduate and member of student government, Alpha Zeta agricultural honorary, Beta Theta Pi fraternity and designated as Senior Leader. His career was spent with the Quaker Oats Company in various locations as a division president and corporate officer. Charlene (Brooks) Yapp was also a native of Manhattan. She majored in home economics at George Yapp is a member of Presidents Club, a KSU Foundation leadership organization for friends and alumni of “My wife, Charlie, and I established this scholarship to recognize the help that we received during our college years and to assist students of talent, but who need some financial support to achieve their capabilities,” Yapp said. “Mr. Yapp’s positive examples of leadership as an outstanding student and in his distinguished career continue as he gives back to his alma mater,” said George Ham, interim dean of the College of Agriculture. “We are very appreciative of his continued support for the College of Agriculture through his recent generous gifts to our scholarship fund.” 07/14/04 — Olathe couple sets up arts and sciences scholarship at Kansas State University Doug Blackwood and Karen Larson, Olathe, Kan., have made a commitment of $500,000 to the Kansas State University Foundation to the Douglas K. Blackwood and Karen M. Larson Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a student enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University, majoring in mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, biology or biochemistry. Larson, a native of Newton, Kan., is the daughter of the late Doris and Arthur Wise. She attended Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan. While in college she was a member of the Union Activities Council and the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She is a retired human resources professional. Blackwood, a native of Hoisington, Kan., is the son of Elsie Blackwood and the late Keith Blackwood. He is a 1971 graduate of Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications and a 1976 graduate of the University of Denver with a master’s degree in mass communications. While in college, he was a member of the Collegian newspaper staff, men’s glee club, Air Force ROTC and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He is a retired computer industry executive.
