Director, Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research

The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research was organized in 1980. Its goals are to encourage and support cancer-related research, training and outreach. Presently, 60 laboratories in multiple administrative units across campus perform relevant research, with the center providing funding for such things as equipment, travel to interact with investigators at other universities, and research support. The center also supports undergraduate and graduate student participation in affiliated laboratories, helping to train the next generation of cancer researchers. Finally, center personnel work to educate the public about cancers and to promote a healthy, anti-cancer lifestyle.

The cancer center was guided by Dr. Terry C. Johnson from its inception until his death from cancer in October 2002. Dr. Johnson worked ceaselessly to eradicate this set of diseases, discover better treatments, and mitigate the impact of cancer on patients and their loved ones. It is highly appropriate that the center has been renamed in his honor, and we will continue to pursue his quest.

This is a very exciting time for the Johnson Cancer Center. Friends of the center donated $2.3 million to help construct a new science building on campus that now provides a permanent home for the center’s administrative headquarters, which contains a public education outreach facility.
